Every year on May 31, the world recognizes World No Tobacco Day. But this year let’s do more than recognize. Let’s act.

Tobacco is not just a personal choice; it’s a public health crisis. It kills an estimated 8 million people each year, devastating families, burdening our healthcare system, and targeting our most vulnerable—our youth. The tobacco industry’s business model is making a profit by getting young people addicted to nicotine with products like flavored vapes and oral nicotine pouches. They target our kids online and through social media, tricking them into thinking that nicotine is harmless.

This year’s theme, “Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing Industry Tactics on Tobacco and Nicotine Products,” is a call to action. We must give our young people truth, not propaganda. We must tell them there are dark intentions behind those brightly packaged products. And we must give them a healthy future, free from addiction and disease.

We, as a community, have the power to make change. We can demand stronger regulations, support smoke-free environments and launch educational programs in schools and local organizations that provide clear, evidence-based information about the dangers of addiction. And we can dismantle the normalization of tobacco in media and popular culture.

This year, let’s make World Tobacco Day more than a day on the calendar. Let’s make it a declaration of our commitment to health, truth and the next generation.
